Canon Eos 5DMk II in action

The technical development within the film industry has literally exploded over the last couple of years.

Recently Canon released a digital stills camera with the capability to record film in HD resolution. This is rather amazing considering the size of the camera. Canon Eos 5D Mk II has a full 24×36 mm 21 million pixel CMOS-image sensor, and can record 1920 x 1080 progressive at 30 fps.

“Considering the size, and its prize level, we decided to purchase one and test wether it could function as a complement to our RED camera,” says Niclas Bergman at edithouse. ” We had a production in Barcelona at the time that was perfectly suited as a field test.”

Two teams worked in parallel; one with a RED camera, and the other with the Canon 5D Mk II. It didn’t take long to find out how quick the Canon was to work with. The camera could move between set-ups in a matter of seconds. It’s low weight made it ideal for camera rigs, which made it really easy to come up with new interesting camera angles.

“The Canon passed the field test”, Niclas Bergman continuous. “In terms of image quality it doesn’t live up to the RED - you’re very limited in post with the material - but considering how quickly you can work with the camera, it’s a good compliment. Some of the shots we couldn’t have made without it. I’m looking forward to see the next generation of the camera.”
